Catalogue Note

After winning a scholarship in 1885, Michelena travelled from his native Venezuela, to study at the famous Académie Julian under Jean-Paul Laurens. A respected and influential teacher, Laurens' fame came largely from his history paintings sent to the Paris Salons, including L'excommunication de Robert le Pieux (1875, Musée d'Orsay). Laurens' painting, and Michelena's faithful replica, captures the moment after Robert II, "The Pious," receives word of his excommunication by Pope Gregory V, who accused the king of incest after his refusal to deny his second wife, and cousin, Berthe of Burgundy. As the priests leave the room, the royals' despair is evident in their expressions and the symbolic gestures of dropped scepter and overturned taper. It has yet to be determined if Michelena's painting was completed as a student work or, as an old label once attached to the work suggests, a specific collector's commission at the cost of 200 francs. Soon after leaving the Académie Julian, Michelena would become the most important Venezuelan painter of the nineteenth century with his L'Enfant Malade winning the Gold Medal at the 1887 Salon (the painting sold in these rooms for the world record price of $1,352,000 on November 16, 2004).

Footnotes

Michelena was born in Valencia in Venezuela. He began his artistic studies under the tutelage of his father, the painter Antonio Michelena. He became known as the one of the leading painters in Venezuela along with artists such as Martín Tovar y Tovar. He subsequently moved to Paris where he studied at the Academie Julian, and later worked under Jean-Paul Laurens, whose influence can be most clearly seen in Michelena's historical subjects and portraits.

Michelena's work achieved great success in the world of Belle Epoque Paris, appealing to major collectors such as the Astors in New York. After two periods living in Paris, he returned to Venezuela in 1890 on the advice of his doctor. His impressive career was cut tragically short in 1898.

Michelena is perhaps best known for his still life and genre scenes, but he remained a popular portraitist, and the present lot is a good example of his quick technical ability and the attention to detail that underpins all of his work.
