CATALOGUE NOTE
In his early years Théobald Michau was apprenticed to thelandscape painter Lucas Achtschellinck (1626-1699) in Brussels. Hewas made Master of the Guild there in 1698 and was elected a memberof the Guild of Antwerp in 1710. Although painted more than acentury later, his works still show a conspicious debt to thedesigns of Jan Brueghel the Elder (1568-1625) and Jan Breughel theYounger (1601-1678), whose river landscape compositions, evidentlyinspired the present work.
