Efter skolgång på bland annat Parsons School of Design, New York, började Duane Michals arbeta som kommersiell fotograf, och tog bilder för modemagasin som Esquire, Mademoiselle och Vogue. Trots att Michals traditionella "enbilds-fotografier" fått mycket uppskattning så är det förmodligen sina fotosekvenser som han är mest välkänd för. På 1960- och 70-talet väckte han stor uppmärksamhet då han började gestalta ett händelseförlopp eller en berättelse genom att förena en serie av fotografier i ett och samma verk. Dessa inledande verk kan bland annat ses i hans legendariska bok ”Sequences” som gavs ut 1970. Auktionens arbete, "Paradise Regained" från 1968 är Michals mest berömda bildsvit och återfinns i flera större samlingar. Michals integrerar dessutom ofta handskriven text i sina bilder dels för att ytterligare förstärka den berättelse som han vill förmedla men också för att verket skall bli än mer personligt. Andra inslag som kännetecknar Michals mycket personliga stil är att han ofta använder sig av dubbelexponeringar, iscensätter sina bilder och ofta använder sig själv som modell - ett arbetssätt som han var bland de första att introducera och som inspirerat många andra fotografer genom åren. Michals ambition att i sina bildsekvenser gå djupare än det som ytan visar och gestalta känslor såväl som filosofiska frågeställningar gör honom till en särling i fotografins historia. "Photographers tend not to photograph what they can't see, which is the very reason one should try to attempt it. Otherwise we're going to go on forever just photographing more faces and more rooms and more places. Photography has to transcend description. It has to go beyond description to bring insight into the subject, or reveal the subject, not as it looks, but how does it feel?"
