Description:
§ Gerald Fenwick Metcalfe (British, 1871-1953), portrait of Lieutenant Eric Elsdale Molson, half length oil on canvas, signed, 68 cms x 68 cms Historical note; Eric Elsdale Molson was born in Chelmsford in 1894, the son of a physician, surgeon and M.P., and a member of the family behind the Canadian brewing company which still bears their surname. He was educated at Chelmsford Grammar School. Cheltenham College, Rugby School, and Cambridge University. He joined the Royal Scots as an officer in September 1914 and landed in France three months later. He was killed in action near Ypres in April 1915. A painting of this sitter and his brother by the same artist was exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1902 Eric is commemorated on the Civic Centre Memorial, Chelmsford and on the Goring War Memorial in Sussex. He was entitled to the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. Two quotes follow; His Colonel wrote:\“I had great admiration for the boy. He was universally popular. We should have considered ourselves very fortunate to get him to come into the regiment permanently. He was such a delightful type of an English gentleman, I often used to think when I looked at him.\”A second said of him\“He was very popular with everyone in the battalion, and especially with his own platoon. Although he was a strict disciplinarian and insisted on things being thoroughly done, he always did the most dangerous work himself, such as going in front of his trench to put up the barbed wire, with the result that his men had absolute confidence in him. he did some particularly daring sniping work, which resulted in him being twice grazed by the German snipers, once in the head. For this work his name was sent to the General.\” Provenance; this lot is being sold on behalf of the Royal Star and Garter Homes a charity providing the very best nursing and dementia care to veterans and their partners. The Charity was founded in 1916 and moved out of its Richmond-upon-Thames Home in 2014. These items were originally in the Richmond Home. Please note that Artists Resale Right is additionally payable on this lot up to a maximum of 4% on top of the hammer price (visit www.dacs.org.uk for more information)..

catalogue note

pan
depicts the pagan god and denizen of the forests who was very much associated with debauchery and sexuality, ancient ritual and unleashed desire. his connection with the nymphs and other rustic gods of fertility made him an attractive subject for many victorian artists and in many paintings of the royal academy summer exhibitions, he can be seen grinning gleefully at scantily clad maidens, or capering after shepherdesses. metcalfe depicts the demi-god playing the pipes which bear his name and were made from the stems of rushes into which the nymph syrinx had been changed to to evade his advances. gathered around pan are a group of maidens who appear to be wood nymphs or
dryads
, the constant companions of the god who like him, represent the spirit of nature.

nymphs were the subject of several paintings at the royal academy in 1896, including the luscious nudes
summer
by henrietta rae,
cupid bound by the nymphs
by john reinhardt weguelin and
spring-time
by philip h. calderon. the great painter of mythology, george frederic watts had painted a bevy of nymphs in his
the infancy of jupiter
which was also seen at the academy in 1896. metcalfe's painting finds its closest parallel in the work of french
academie
painters, such as william adolfe bouguereau and alexandre cabanel whose images of classicism are more sensual in their treatment than their british counterparts.

gerald metcalfe is better known as a portrait painter and regularly exhibited at the royal academy from 1894 onwards.
pan
appears to have been his most ambitious work and the most impressive of a very small number of fanciful pictures. little is known of his life or career although he is known to have lived at 95 cheyne walk in chelsea, a locality famous for the residents rossetti, whistler and george elliott. after the turn of the twentieth century metcalfe moved to guildford and continued to paint elegant portraits. it would seem that he was friends with byam shaw as he painted mrs byam shaw in 1900 and the two artists share a similar approach to fanciful subjects, although metcalfe's output in this field was unfortunately much smaller than shaw's.
