1083 Robert Tate Mckenzie (Pennsylvania/Canada, 1867-1938) Ice Bird, 1925, signed "R. Tate Mc Kensie/1925" and inscribed with title, stamped "Gorham Co. Founders/OGWX", patinated bronze, with wood plinth and plaque reading "Graciously Donated/To The/Clinton F.S.C./By Hamilton College/1967", 27-7/8 in. Note: This sculpture is a depiction of Gustave Lussi (1898-1993), a Swiss ski jumper. After suffering a nasty fall, which left the physical scars of an indentation on his skull and broken fingers, he became a figure skating coach. Lussi worked with Button and many other Olympic and World champions including Barbara Ann Scott, John Curry and Dorothy Hamill. Lussi's work with Button at Lake Placid, New York was instrumental in preparing him for World and Olympic competition. As a ski jumper, Lussi understood both flight and rotation principles. He had an analytical mind, breaking every movement down into each of its component parts. Tait Mckenzie/1915' on base; also numbered '6' and inscribed 'Orlando Crease, Jr.' along the base; also with "Roman Bronze Works N.Y.' foundry mark, bronze with greenish-brown patina Height (including base): 17 in. (43.1cm) provenance: Private Collection, Georgia. note: In 1915, Dr. Robert Tait Mc Kenzie, then a member of the executive board of the Boy Scouts organization in Philadelphia, presented the council with a small bronze figure of a boy scout. In 1937, he created a life-size version titled "The Ideal Scout," which stood in front of the Cradle of Liberty Council in Philadelphia until 2013.
