Description:
Henry Lee McFee (1886-1953), Modernist Still Life with Flowers and Pottery, Oil on Canvas, depicting a vase of tulips and flowers in a bowl, signed 'McFee' lower right, matted and framed. Frame size 30 in. x 34 in. Together with book 'Henry Lee McFee ' published by Scripps College, Claremont, California, including an essay on McFee by Arthur Miller.

Henry Lee McFee was born in St. Louis, Missouri in 1886. In 1907 he received a large inheritance which allowed him to paint full time. He spent two summers attending classes at the Art Students League in Woodstock, New York studying under Birge Harrison. In 1913 he exhibited six works at the MacDowell club, and in 1920 his work was shown at the Gallerie Georges Petit's International Art Exhibition in Paris. In 1939 McFee was appointed director of the Witte Museum School of Art and in 1940 he held positions at Claremont College and Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles. McFee's synchronist and cubist-influenced works are highly sought after, and his works have been exhibited at prestigious venues including the Carnegie Institute, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Corchoran Gallery, the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum.
