Lot # 010 Post-War & Contemporary Art Live auction Jean Albert Mc Ewen AANFM RCA 1923 - 1999 Canadian Grand icône oil on canvas circa 1963 signed and on verso signed and titled 19 3/4 x 17 3/4 in 50.2 x 45.1cm Provenance: Gift of the Artist to a Private Collector, Montreal Acquired from the above by the present Private Collection, Montreal Literature: Roald Nasgaard, Abstract Painting in Canada, Art Gallery of Nova Scotia, 2007, page 177 This elegant oil on canvas encapsulates the drama and intensity of Jean Mc Ewen’s distinctive approach to colour. Inspired by works from Colour Field painters such as Mark Rothko and Barnett Newman, he set down layer upon layer of lustrous oil paint, building up to a mottled surface of delicate tonal variations. Art historian Roald Nasgaard writes about Mc Ewen’s practice: “His continuous coloured textures are built out of strata of superimposed paint layers, sometimes as many as a dozen. Their ever more variegated hues and tones lie in ambiguous depths, sometimes opaque and other times transparent and luminous.” In Grand icône, Mc Ewen arranges a fiery orange cruciform between two textured slabs of mustard yellow. Underlying layers of chartreuse, yellow and black emerge through the mottled surface of the central shape. The four corners of the piece are accentuated by thick rust and crimson squares. With its rich medley of colour and Mc Ewen’s unique handling of paint, Grand icône is intensely vibrant, and each form is imbued with texture and dazzling effects of transparency.

JEAN ALBERT MCEWEN, R.C.A. COMPOSITION signed; also signed and dated \“24.11.62\” on the reverse 20 ins x 20 ins; 50.8 cms x 50.8 cms Provenance: Private Collection, Montreal Literature: Constance Naubert-Riser, Jean Mc Ewen: Colour in Depth , Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Montreal, 1987, pages 19 and 39. In the introductory essay to the 1987 exhibition "Jean Mc Ewen: Colour in Depth" at The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, Constance Naubert-Riser writes: \“Colour and its relationship to two dimensional space is, of course, the subject of all painting. How, though, can a flat surface convert a sense of depth without the traditional devices of perspective and chiarcoscuro?" Naubert-Riser's examination and analysis of the work of Jean Mc Ewen (1923-1999) aspired to demonstrate precisely how the artist embraced this challenge and "revealed the qualities of depth inherent in (colour)." This lot falls within the early years of Mc Ewen's search for personal solutions to the colour-depth enigma. Others had tackled this quandary, too, and Mc Ewen was certainly aware of the resolutions suggested by American colour field painters. Many Mc Ewens from 1957 onward bear titles that serve to situate them within a specific series. Such titles were not meant to act as a reference to subject - though this is often misunderstood by those unfamiliar with Mc Ewen's intentions - but were instead themselves acts of poetry.
