Footnote:
Provenance: Commissioned directly from Mo McDermott by the present owner. Northern Invasion
It was Mo McDermott who introduced Celia Birtwell both to hisfriend,

David Hockney,

and to her future husbandand creative partner,

Ossie Clark,

for his partalready impressing his teachers at art school in Manchester at thetime.
Ossie Clark,

Celia Birtwell,

Mo McDermott andDavid Hockney "went on to form what is still described as aNorthern invasion of Swinging London,

and it wasn't longbefore they were its epi-centre" (Susannah Frankel)
McDermott met Celia Birtwell in the art school of the SalfordTechnical College in 1956. She writes of him thus: "Mo was a verystrong character in my life" she says. "He quite changed it. He wasan only child and his mother didn't want him to go to art school. He was brought up in Hanky Park,

where Coronation Streetstarted. He lived in a little house,

you know,
back-to-back entries,

and had an outside loo wherehe'd painted a big picture of a cat called Bogey"
