A second generation Hudson River School painter, McCord studied at the Hudson River Institute, the Claverack Academy in Claverack, New York and with Samuel Morse and James Fairman. Lot 375 George Herbert McCord (American, 1848-1909) Boats at Low Tide Signed "G.H. McCord A.N.A." l.r. Oil on canvas, 8 x 14 in. (20.3 x 35.6 cm), framed. Condition: Pigment fluorescence, surface grime. Estimate $1,000-1,500 No evidence of retouch. Dark brown pigment shows up more pronounced than the other pigment under u.v. light, but appears original. There is surface grime, with spotting to the right center. There is a small area, center left, measuring about 1/2 inch square, with uneven paint application and with a few small losses that are visible with a magnifying glass.
