Sale 2456 Lot 60 RICHARD MAYHEW (1924 - ) Eclipse. Oil on linen canvas, 1965. 762x1016 mm; 34x40 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto. Signed and titled in pencil, upper stretcher bar verso. Exhibited: 30 Contemporary Black Artists, Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Minneapolis, MN, October 17 - November 24, 1968, with the label on the backboard; Midtown Galleries, New York with the label on the upper stretcher bar verso. Provenance: acquired directly from the artist; private collection, New York; thence by descent, private collection, New York. Eclipse is an excellent, early example of the atmospheric and abstracted landscapes of Richard Mayhew. Eclipse is a scarce painting from the period in the mid-1960s in which he began to add the brighter, saturated colors that he is known for today. Just the year before, Mayhew had joined the artists group Spiral in New York, and exhibited in their inaugural exhibiton in the summer of 1964.

RICHARD MAYHEW (1924 - )
New Hampshire Valley.
Oil on linen canvas, circa 1960. 635x1016 mm; 25x40 inches, Signed in oil, lower right.
Provenance: Robert Isaacson, New York, with a handwritten note attached to frame back and on the stretcher bars; private collection, Atlanta.
The Robert Isaacson gallery represented Richard Mayhew in the late 1950s through the early 1960s, giving him four solo exhibitions. Although the Robert Isaacson Gallery represented the estate of Elie Nadelman and championed Magic Realist painters, Isaacson's main interest was nineteenth century academic painting. Richard Mayhew's singular focus on landscape and his affinity with Impressionism made the artist a good fit.
This beautiful and verdant canvas by Richard Mayhew is one of the earliest paintings by the artist we have handled. His atmospheric 1960s and early 1970s landscapes have a rich palette that is much earthier and darker than the high key colors found in his more contemporary paintings.
