Lot# 2152 Nell Brooker Mayhew (1875 - 1940 Los Angeles, CA) A group of five woodblock prints depicting California Missions: "California Mission - San Juan Bautista", "California Mission - Santa Inez", "Mission San Juan Capistrano California - founded 1770", "Mission San Luis Obispo California" and "San Jose Mission, California", 5 pieces Each: color etching on paper mounted on board under glass Each: signed and inscribed in pencil in the lower right margin: Color Etching by N. Brooker Mayhew Los Angeles, titled in pencil in the lower left margin The first and largest plate size: 11" H x 23" W Provenance: Through descent, to Private Collection, Glendale, CA. Exhibitions: National Arts Club, New York, NY, "Exhibition of Living American Etchers", December, 1926, "Mission San Jose - California". Notes: The first: framed size: 19" H x 32" W x 2" D. The second: plate size: 10.75" H x 20.5" W; framed size: 21.5" H x 30" W x 1" D. The third: plate size: 9" H x 20.5" W; framed size: 15" H x 29" W x 1" D. The fourth: plate size: 11" H x 15" W; framed size: 21" H x 24" W x .75" D. The fifth: plate size: 6.75" H x 14.75" W; framed size: 12.5" H x 21" W x 1" D. Condition: Visual: Each in generally good condition. Margins trimmed and paper mounted to artist's backing paper where she signed and titled. Backing paper discolored. Lot# 2178 Nell Brooker Mayhew (1875 - 1940 Los Angeles, CA) "Harbor Evening" Oil on canvas laid to artist's board Signed lower left: N. Brooker Mayhew, titled verso 17.75" H x 14.75" W Provenance: Through descent, to Private Collection, Glendale, CA. Notes: An oil on board autumn landscape attributed to Anne Squire (20th Century American) is used as the backing board for the present work. Framed size: 22" H x 18" W x 1.5" D. Condition: Visual: Stable paint shrinkage throughout particularly in the lower corners. A 2" area of canvas lifting from the board in the right center with some associated spots of loss. Losses on the extreme lower right corner edge and some minor losses along other edges. Canvas edges roughly cut. Artist pinholes in the upper and lower left corners.
