Description:
Edgard Maxence YOUNG WOMAN WITH SWANS OR THE SWANS NANTES 1871-1954 LA BERNERIE-EN-RETZ Signed upper right E. Maxence. Watercolor and pastelon paper 45,1 x 56 cm ; 17 3/4 by 22 1/2 in. Exhibited Probably, Salon des Artistes français, Paris 1912, n°2707, titled Les Cygnes Catalogue Note Edgard Maxence's first master was Elie Delaunay at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, before he entered the studio of Gustave Moreau, who deeply impressed the young artist. Influenced by the latter, Maxence also kept an eye on how art developed on the other side of the Channel, especially on the Pre-Raphaelites whose deliberately archaic esthetic seduced him. In the following decades, Maxence remained one of the last great French symbolist artists, carrying on with his dreamlike vision until the beginning of the 20th century, looking to the past, myths, and legends of his native Brittany. The Swans is probably the work he exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1912. It is described in the catalogue as a watercolour and a pastel, which corresponds to our work. As was Maxence's habit, he depicts the profile of a young woman's face, her timeless beauty and long red braided hair. Leaning on a balustrade, she seems to be feeding swans, in a landscape imbued with mystery.

Description:
Edgard Maxence (French 1871 - 1954) The Madonna Pencil and watercolour Signed lower centre 37 x 29cm (14½ x 11¼ in.) Provenance: Walker Bagshawe Fine Art, London Edgar Maxence (1891 1954) was a French Symbolist painter, born in Nantes, who studied under Elie Delaunay and Gustave Moreau at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. During his career Maxence exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Francais from 1894 until 1939 and at the Salon de la Rose et Croix from 1895 until 1897. Maxences work is typically characterised by a more subtle mystical symbolism, influenced by the work of the Pre-Raphaelites working in Britain during the 19th century and as is the case with the lot offered here, Maxence often depicted religious scenes with a focus on female subjects. Works by Maxence can be seen in the Musee dOrsay, Paris, The Smithsonian Art Museum, Washington D.C and the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia.
