CATALOGUE NOTE

Matthieu (also known as Mathue, but who sometimes signs as here

matteu),
was a charming and highly original Dutch

petit maître
. His works are almost always full of mood,
with strongly coloured atmospheric effects: in the present picture
a richly evoked
Abendstimmung
. They are usually, as here,
Southern European in spirit, though never overtly Italianate, and
he was one of the very few Dutch painters to have been influenced
(though not in the present work) by Elsheimer. Like Lieve
Verschuier, whose atmospheric evening seascapes are also
indefinably Mediterranean in mood, Matthieu probably never
travelled south of the Alps, although very little is known of his
life.

Another picture by the artist, one of his largest, of a broadly
similar diagonal composition with a road leading from the
foreground over a bridge, with a hill rising beyond, but of much
less accentuated mood, was sold in Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 7 November
2000, lot 19 (72,000 GLDR).

Like Frits Butôt, who owned more than one, the Herwegs had a
special affection for Matthieu.

Sold with the certificate of Dr. Walther Bernt, dated 27 May
1970.
