Jan Matejko, a Polish painter of historical scenes and portraits, was born in Cracow in 1838, dying here in 1893. He studied at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts, under Hermann Anschütz in Munich between 1858 and 1859, and under Christian Ruben at the Vienna Academy between 1859 and 1860. In 1860 the artist settled in Cracow where he was appointed Director of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1873. Jan Matejko\’\’ \’\’s home was transformed into a museum in 1904.

The artist rose to prominence thanks to his moving depictions of Poland\’\’\’\’s history, and for his portraits which demonstrated an equally skillful ability to blend the temperament and clarity already evident in his monumental historical compositions. (Excerpts from Thieme-Becker, Allg. Lexikon der Malerei, Vol. XXIV)

The portrait shown here is a three-quarter view of the physician Professor Carol Gilewski (1832 – 1871) from Cracow, who studied under Professor Schuh, Director of the Surgical Department at the Faculty of Medicine in Vienna. Gilewski earned his doctorate in Vienna in 1856 and was employed as a medical assistant at the Oppolzer Clinic before being appointed Professor of Forensic Medicine at the University of Cracow in 1861. He later became Director of the Clinic for Internal Medicine in 1865. He rose to prominence not only for his revolutionary operational techniques but also his staunch and publicly-voiced anticlerical leanings. (Biography Portal ÖBL Print Edition)

provenance:marya matejko (the artist's sister) józeczku (a gift from the above on 27 march 1853) acquired by the present owner in 1971 executed when he was just twelve years old, the storming of the guardhouse is one of matejko's earliest works known to exist, heralding his later career as polands most revered and influential history painter, an artist who forged a heroic vision of the history of poland at a time of insurrection and repression. the picture was inspired by michal stachowicz's painting the taking over of the main guardhouse, depicting the insurrection of 1794. on 24 march 1794, tadeusz kosciuszko, a hero of the american revolution, proclaimed a national uprising against the partition of poland by russia, austria and germany, and became it's commander in chief. the insurrection was violently repressed, and despite heroics efforts, the polish state ceased to exist in 1795 until its reinstatement in 1918. \\`\\`sensitive to historic monuments of his city, cracow, matejko shared the belief of his fellow historians that the past should determine the greatness of the nation and its rights to independant existence. rather than illustrating a particular historical event, matejko would compose a synthetic vision encompassing its reasons, action and results in one ponderable moment. he conceived history as a drama, a fight of opposing forces, which he personalised in his heroes.' (agnieszka morawinska, \\`\\`watching for the dawn of freedom', nineteenth century polish painting, new york, 1988). to be sold together with a letter of authentication by dr. kazimierz buczkowski of the cracow museum, dated 1944. we are grateful to mrs malgorzata buyko, director of the jan matejko house dom jana matejki, cracow, for her assistance in the cataloguing of this work. fig. 1: the inscription on the reverse by marya matejko 089d02130 fig. 2: michal stachowicz, the swearing-in of general tadeusz kosciuszkos on 24 march 1794 in cracow, 1797 @ national museum, cracow 124d02130
