A small ivory netsuke of a hare By Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892), Osaka, mid/late 19th century Signed Kaigyokusai with seal Masatsugu. 3.5cm (1 3/8in) wide. 象牙彫根付 兎 銘「懐玉斎 正次(方印)」 19世紀中期/後期 Provenance: Mrs de Sedle, 1963. Published: Ueda, NNK, no.11. Meinertzhagen, MCI, p.292. Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.133, no.K172. Seated, its head lowered and turned slightly to the left, its ears pressed back and its legs drawn in for compactness, the ivory unstained and the eyes inlaid with amber. Very similar example are illustrated in Coullery, Baur, p.355, no.C1116; and Arakawa, GCN, p.63, no.90.

An ivory netsuke of a puppy By Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892), Osaka, mid/late 19th century Signed in a rectangular reserve Kaigyokusai with seal Masatsugu. 3.8cm (1½n) wide. 象牙彫根付 仔犬 銘「懐玉斎 正次(方印)」 19世紀中期/後期 Provenance: Purchased at Boons Park, Kent, England, 1964. Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.123, no.K63. Lying with its head turned to the left and its left paws resting on a bird whistle, one leg forming the himotoshi, a knotted collar around its neck, with one long cord trailing over the back and beneath, the ivory unstained and the eyes inlaid in amber. Similar examples are illustrated in Davey, MTH, p.53, no.126 and Lazarnick, NIA, vol.1, p.563. In 1964, Julius Katchen surprised netsuke aficionados, including Geoffrey Moss, who was bidding for him, as well as the underbidder, Douglas Wright, by paying the record price £945 for this netsuke in a small country sale, a record which stood unchallenged for five years.

An ebony netsuke of an Asian black bear By Kaigyokusai Masatsugu (1813-1892), Osaka, 19th century Signed in a polished rectangular reserve Kaigyoku. 4.2cm (1 5/8in) wide. 黒檀彫根付 月輪熊 銘「懐玉」 19世紀 Provenance: Dr Wolf collection, purchased from Barry Davies Oriental Art, 1998. Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.147, no.K358. Seated, leaning forward to lick one forepaw, an ivory crescent inlaid on its chest, its eyes inlaid in amber with dark pupils. This is one of only three netsuke of a bear by Kaigyokusai. The other two are similar to each other, each leaning forward to lick its right forepaw. One is from the Baron Go collection, housed in the Tokyo National Museum (Arakawa, GCN, no.96), the other in the Raymond and Frances Bushell collection in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (Goodall, BLACMA, no.364).

Naturalistically carved and opening on a hinge to reveal a minutely carved scene of Jo and Uba seated, drinking sake, accompanied by a crane, beneath a spreading pine tree, and clouds.

Ltd., London, 1963. Published: Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.135, no.K201. Seated, its head lowered as it scratches its right flank, its legs drawn forward and forming the himotoshi, the well-toned ivory slightly worn and the eyes inlaid in amber with dark pupils. For somewhat similar examples, signed Kaigyoku, see Davey, MTH, p.52, nos.121/122.
