Seated, its head lowered to the left as it licks its raised hind paw, its tail passing over the left flank and its legs drawn in for compactness, one forming the himotoshi, the slightly worn ivory with a good patina and the pupils inlaid.

A rare ivory netsuke of a crane By Masanao, Kyoto, late 18th century Signed in an oval reserve Masanao. 4.8cm (1 7/8in) wide. 象牙彫根付 鶴 銘「正直」 18世紀後期 Provenance: Gordon Fox collection, Montreal. Published: Moss, EIN, no.44. Katchen, N7, vol.1, p.91, no.K483. Of almost circular compact manju form, its neck bent and its head resting on one spread wing, the plumage carved in delicate low relief on the reverse, the slightly worn ivory with a good patina and the one visible eye with an inlaid pupil. Although of flattened form, the crane exhibits some of the attributes associated with the work of Masanao, the strong neck, the finely carved plumage, and a well placed and confidently engraved signature.
