Maryan Retrospective
, 1983.
Born in Poland, Maryan and his family were arrested in 1939 and sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp; he was to endure six torturous years there before the liberation of the camps in 1945. Released at the age of 18, he was the only member of his family to survive. Maryan studied art in Jerusalem and later in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts. He eventually moved to New York where he began his highly regarded and intensely personal figural series "Personages". Each work in this series depicts an exaggerated, truncated, or contorted solitary figure. Using bold, primary colors, and strong, determined brush strokes, the works often have an almost brutal intensity and a sense of pulsating emotion. Though admitting these figural paintings referenced his experiences in the camps during the war, Maryan remained somewhat vague about specific symbolic interpretations.
