Cobweb in a loose box with her foal at the door
oil on canvas
40.5 x 54.5cm (15 15/16 x 21 7/16in).
Subject engraved by J. Webb for The Sporting Magazine and published in April 1830. Bay filly foaled in 1821 by Phantom out of Filagree by Soothsayer . Bred by and the property of the Earl of Jersey. Won 1824 Newmarket- Craven Meeting : a sweep of 1,000 sous Newmarket- First Spring : received forfeit of 1,000 sous each in a sweep Epsom- 1,000 Guineas : 5-2 against Cobweb Epsom- The Oaks : 11-8 on Cobweb She was now taken out of training although 'being as sound and well as it was possible for a horse to be', and retired to Lord Jersey's stud. Her pedigree contained the essence of all the best racers in the history of The Turf. A letter to The Sporting Magazine , published in June 1830 referring to the engraving stated, 'To amateurs of the Turf her portrait is the most interesting that has appeared for many years and does unfounded credit both to the pencil and taste of Mr. Marshall'.
