Lot number: 262
Jacob Maris (1837-1899) Trees along the riverbank signed 'J Maris' (lower left) watercolour on paper, 35,5x18 cm Exhibited: -The Hague, Gemeentemuseum (22 December 1935-2 February 1936)/Amsterdam, Stedelijk Museum (8 February-8 March 1936), 'Maris Tentoonstelling', no. 126. Provenance: -With Kunsthandel Buffa & Zonen, Amsterdam, where acquired by mr. E.H. Crone. The property of the late Mr and Mrs Crone – Haver Droeze, to be sold to benefit the Crone – Haver Droeze Fund, posted at the Prins Bernhard Cultuur Fonds. The following ten lots once were part of the collection of paintings and watercolours mostly by artists from the The Hague School formed by Eduard Heinrich Crone (1852-1917), Amsterdam. Eduard Crone was a successful businessman and expended the trading firm founded by his grandfather Henrich Gottfried Theodor Crone (1766–1855) who came from Bremen in 1790. The firm specialized in colonial products, such as coffee, tea, tobacco, textiles etc., for which Eduard opened a world market . Eduard Heinrich Crone started collecting in 1895 and made most of his acquisitions through Kunsthandel François Buffa, whose owner Johan Slagmulder he befriended. In 1909 Eduard and his wife H.R.E. Crone-Muller (1862–1945) moved from Keizersgracht 58 to Hobbemastraat 4 (now number 12) where the collection was housed in a special gallery. It was situated across the street from the Drucker Fraser villa, who also had a gallery built next to their house. At Eduard Crone\’s death in 1917 the collection comprised 67 paintings and 9 watercolours, mostly by artists from the The Hague School, but also by Corot, Diaz de la Peña and Vollon. In 1945, after Mrs. Crone\’s death, the collection was exhibited in the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and in 1947 was given on a long term loan to the Gemeentemuseum, The Hague. Upon the death of Eduard\’s son Gottfried Henrich Crone in 1961, negotiations started for an acquisition of 54 works by the Gemeentemuseum and, with a large support by the Society Rembrandt, was confirmed in 1964. Among the acquired works were Jacob Maris\’s 'Girl knitting in Montmartre' from 1869 and the 'View of Amsterdam with Schreierstoren' from the 1880\’s, also by Jacob Maris; Matthijs Maris\’s 'Mother and goat'; Anton Mauve\’s 'Woman and goat in Laren'; and J.H. Weissenbruch\’s 'Souvenir de Haarlem', which all count as key works of The Hague School painting. Ernst Crone\’s most favorite artist was Jozef Israëls, of whom he owned nine paintings. Of 'Children of the Sea' he possessed two versions, of which one will now be offered for sale. He also owned one of Josef Israels interpretations of the Pancake baker, for which he paid fl. 38.000 in 1907. The present lots were among the thirteen works which after 1964 were returned to the family, to be passed on to Ernst Heinrich Crone\’s grandson, the late Mr Harald Crone. See for further details on the collection: H. van der Linden – Kolenberg, 'De Collectie E.H. Crone: Geschiedenis van een schilderijenverzameling', 1999.
