Description:
Eugène Marioton 1857-1933 FRENCH BÉLLUAIRE (THE TAMER) signed Eug.Marioton and titled BELLUAIRE bronze, brown patina height 33 1/2 in. 85 cm Eugène Marioton was a pupil of Augustin Alexandre Dumont. He had a long and successful career as a sculptor and medal engraver, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from 1882 until 1922. As with Le Fascinator or Charmeur de serpents, th epresent model is one of his best-known works. The composition is taut and sinuous as the charmer controls the panther dangerously crouching at his feet. The subject fits within the contemporary fascination with Oriental themes. Overall in good original condition with the usual wear to the patina in places especially to the top of head, arms and legs consistent with handling and touching. Light scratches consistent with age. Extensive staining around base. In response to your inquiry, we are pleased to provide you with a general report of the condition of the property described above. Since we are not professional conservators or restorers, we urge you to consult with a restorer or conservator of your choice who will be better able to provide a detailed, professional report. Prospective buyers should inspect each lot to satisfy themselves as to condition and must understand that any statement made by Sotheby's is merely a subjective qualified opinion.
