CATALOGUE NOTE
Eugène Marioton was a pupil of Augustin Alexandre Dumont. He hada long and successful career as a sculptor and medal engraver, exhibiting regularly at the Salon from 1882 until 1922. LeFascinator or Charmeur de serpents is one of his best-known works. The composition is taut and sinuous as the charmer controls thesnake dangerously entwined around his arm. The subject fits withinthe contemporary fascination with Oriental themes.
