Starting price:

Lot number: 81
Description: Oil on canvas painting, featuring rapids with Laurentians in the background. Signed and attr. Clara Margaretha (Dutch-Canadian, b. 1917) on lower right corner. Dated March 23, 1964. 20 x 23 in (50.8 x 58.4 cm). Clara Margaretha \“Greta\” Jacobs-Blain was born in her grandparents\’ home in the Netherlands. She entered the Art Institute in Amsterdam when she was 15 years old, working full-time hours at a factory and then attending art classes in the evening. She painted in oils until her late 80s, painting under the name C.M. Blain. In honour of her milestone birthday, her oil paintings adorn Villa\’s main hallway. One day, her boss presented her with a task. It came from the Hanna Barbera animation studio. She was given a sketch of The Flintstones family and asked to sketch screen prints of them in various different situations. She remembers sketching the whole gang as a sort of Beatles rock band, with all the instruments made from stone. She went on to specialize in sketches of Barney, Betty and Bamm-Bamm Rubble. Her patterns adorned everything from baby-doll pyjamas to pillow cases to table cloths. She worked long hours. \“If I had 10 cents for every sketch I made …\” she said. Blain moved from her home in Beaconsfield to Villa Beaurepaire 18 months ago. Before she moved, most of her sketches were destroyed after a leaking pipe infiltrated the storage closet. A featured article on the celebration of her centenary birthday can be found on the Montreal Gazette ( PROVENANCE: Private collection, Montreal, QC
