Description:
Carlo Maratta (Camerano 1625–1713 Rome) The Madonna reading, oil on canvas, 39.5x33cm, framed Provenance: possibly Collection of Giovanni Antonio Tedeschi, 1712; possibly Farquharson Collection, Braemar Castle, Aberdeenshire, Scotland (according to a label on the reverse); sale, Kunsthaus Lempertz, Cologne, 20 May 2017, lot 1091 (as Attributed to Carlo Maratta); art market, London We are grateful to Stella Rudolph for confirming the attribution. She dates the present painting to circa 1695. According to Stella Rudolph, the present work could be identified as the work mentioned in the 1712 inventory of the collection of Carlo Maratta in Rome (see L. Bershad, The newly discovered testament and inventories of Carlo Maratta and his wife Francesca, in: Antologia di Belle Arti, 1985, p. 84). Indeed, in this list there is: \‘Una Madonna in tela di mezza testa con cornice dorata mezza figura in atto di leggere con paese dipinta da Sig. Cav. re Carlo Maratta data al Sig. Gio: Antonio Tedeschi scarpellino in scomputo de\’ lavori fatti\’ [\‘a Madonna on a half-head size canvas with a gilded frame, half-figure, reading with landscape painted by Sig. Cav. re Carlo Maratta given to Sig. Gio: Antonio Tedeschi, stone carver on account of his works\’]. Comparisons with other works suggest a date of around 1695, the period when the artist was at the height of his career and was celebrated throughout Europe. Indeed, the typology of the Virgin\’s features correspond with those of Rebecca in the painting Rebecca and Eliezer at the Well preserved in the Galleria Corsini, Rome (inv. no. 402)

Description:
Carlo Maratti MADONNA AND CHILD ADORED BY THREE ANGELS CAMERANO 1625 - 1713 ROME oil on copper 12 7/8 by 9 in.; 32.7 by 22.9 cm. Catalogue Note This graceful composition by Carlo Maratti repeats a detail found at the center of his celebrated Adoration of the Shepherds fresco executed in 1656-1657 as part of a grand decorative cycle commissioned by Pope Alexander VII for the Palazzo Quirinale in Rome. The intimate arrangement of the Madonna and Child adored by three angels, one of whom tenderly kisses the hand of Christ, proved a successful source of inspiration for reduced replicas, with slight variations, that Maratti made for private devotion. The present work will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné on the works of Carlo Maratti being prepared by Prof. Stella Rudolph, who dates it to no later than the mid-1660s.1 1. Prof. Stella Rudolph's letter, dated 12 January 2018, is available upon request.

Carlo Maratti, Karel van Vogelaer, called Carlo dei Fiori or Distelbloom PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG WOMAN, THREE QUARTER LENGTH, AS FLORA oil on canvas 50 1/2 by 39 5/8 in.; 128.2 by 100.7 cm. Read Condition Report Register or Log-in to view condition report Or Provenance Anonymous sale, Cologne, Van Ham, 21 November 2008, lot 552 (as Maratta). Catalogue Note We are grateful to Francesco Petrucci and Dario Beccarini for, independently, confirming the figure of Flora to be by Maratti, on the basis of photographs. We are also grateful to Yuri Primarosa, also on the basis of photographs, for identifying the flowers to be by Karel van Vogelaer, one of the floral still life painters who collaborated with Maratti. Paintings by Maratti depicting the subject of Flora are documented in several old inventories including that of Livio Odescalchi (1713-14); Francesca Gommi (1711), the artists\’s wife; and Marchese Niccolò Maria Pallavicini.1 The pose of Flora is very close to that of the female figure by Maratti in Still Life with a Woman Picking Grapes in the Hermiatge Museum, St. Petersburg, which is a collaborative work by Maratti and Christian Berentz. This painting is accompanied by a copy of a photo-certificate from Wilhelm Suida, dated Zurich, September 1932, stating this painting to be a work by Carlo Maratti. 1. See The Getty Provenance Index Databases, Item 1063, Archival Inventory I-629 (Odescalchi); D.L. Bershad, \“The Newly Discovered Testament and Inventories of Carlo Maratti and His Wife Francesca (Gommi),\” in Antologia di belli arti, no. 25-26 1985, p. 83; and S. Description:
Carlo Maratti A SHEET OF STUDIES OF PUTTI, WITH SEPARATE STUDIES FOR THE HEAD AND RIGHT LEG OF ONE, AND ANOTHER HEAD SEEN IN PROFILE CAMERANO 1625 - 1713 ROME Red chalk heightened with white chalk on light blue paper 345 by 271 mm Maratti was the last exponent of the classical tradition of Roman painting. He arrived in Rome in 1636, and in the following year entered the workshop of Andrea Sacchi, where he was trained to draw and copy the great masters, starting with Raphael, whose work was highly influential in the formation of Maratti's style. This sheet of studies of putti is characteristic of his graphic style, as is the use of red chalk on blue paper. Although it must have been made as a preparatory study, it does not seem to be related to any known work by the artist. 84 Carlo Maratti Red chalk heightened with white chalk on light blue paper 345 by 271 mm Please notify me when the condition report is available
