Description:
THE LETTER Jean-Baptiste Mallet GRASSE 1759 - 1835 PARIS oil on canvas 18 1/4 by 21 5/8 in.; 46.2 by 55.5 cm. Read Condition Report Register or Log-in to view condition report Or Catalogue Note Jean-Baptiste Mallet first exhibited at the Salon in 1791, after spendingtime as an apprentice toPierre Paul Prud'hon in Paris. He exhibited in both oil and gouache, primarily painting genre subjects of elegant figures in interiors. While the influence of his contemporaries Louis-Leopold Boilly and Marguerite Gerard are evident, Mallet's works had a unique sense of setting; he placed his characters in grand, theatre-like compositions and paid great attention to decorative details such as the costumes and interior design.

'LA VISITE AUX JEUNES MARIÉS'
Watercolor and gouache;
bears inscription to backing, verso: Cette gouache appartien / au Citoyen Trahon.
304 by 396 mm;12 by 15½ in

Mallet, who exhibited at the Paris Salon from 1791 to 1824, carried the thriving 18th-century tradition of gouache painting through well into the 19th century, and was his generation's leading exponent of depictions in this medium of elegant interiors with social - often amorous - encounters.

The present work offers a glimpse into the household of a fashionable and affluent pair of young newlyweds, nonchalantly receiving guests. A second version of the composition by Mallet exists in the collection of the Musée Cognacq-Jay, Paris. For an up to date summary of his career, see Margaret Morgan Grasselli, Renaissance to Revolution, French Drawings from the National Gallery of Art, 1500-1800, exhib. cat., Washington, D.C., National Gallery of Art, 2009-10, p. 268.

Laid down on card, which is in turn hinged to an old board. Some very minor abrasions to areas of the sheet, particularly to its extremities. Otherwise in predominantly good condition with the medium fresh. Sold in a giltwood frame.
