This kinetic sculpture was created for Fred Lawrence Whipple,director of the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory from 1955-73and accomplished professor of Astronomy at HarvardUniversity.
Texas born artist Frank Malina was a pioneer in the field ofaeronautics and was the first Director of the NASA Jet PropulsionLaboratory in California. His team at that facility was responsiblefor the successful launch of the first American rocket into space,the WAC Corporal. In 1951 Malina became head of UNESCO's divisionof scientific research but left shortly thereafter to pursue aninterest in kinetic art while living and working in Paris. His workwas widely exhibited and notably included in 'CyberneticsSerendipity,' the first exhibition to explore aspects ofcomputer-aided artwork presented at the ICA in London in1968.

Excellent original condition with voltage/wattage details alsoincised verso by the artist. Minor occasional scuffs to the bottomedge and sides. With paper instructions for unpacking lumidynesigned by artist and affixed verso. Bulbs were recently replaced bythe artist's son. This work cycles on a 20 minute repeat (i.e. itcreates unique images for 20 minutes without repeating).
