Description:
Francesco Maggiotto (Venice 1738-1805) Jupiter brandishing a thunderbolt, accompanied by his eagle signed and dated 'Francesco Maggiotto Ven: 1782.' and inscribed with a verse from Horace's third Ode, with number '151' black chalk, pen and black ink, grey wash, inscribed oval 8 3/8 x 6 in. (21.2 x 15.2 cm.) Theophil Friedrich Jakob Künhans, Venice. Francesco Maggiotto was the son of Domenico Fedeli, called Domenico Maggiotto (1713-1794), a pupil of Piazzetta. Francesco himself studied first with his father and afterwards with Michelangelo Morlaiter (see lot 76). One of his pupils was Francesco Hayez (1791-1881). The inscription on the drawing reproduces part of Horace's third Ode: [Nothing's too high for mortal men: like fools, we aim at the heavens themselves, sinful,] we won't let Jupiter set aside his lightning bolts of anger.
