William Withrow, Contemporary Canadian Painting, 1972, pages 18 -20
Inscribed on verso by Eric Freifeld on March 18, 1980, "In myconsidered opinion this is unquestionably a JWG MacDonald (Jock)work of his last period."
Jock Macdonald is considered one of Canada's most influential andimportant artists. He was not only devoted to his craft, but wasalso a teacher and mentor to many of those who would go on tobecome Canada's most critical artists. Macdonald was a centralfigure in the development of the Painters Eleven group, having beenintroduced to the group through its founding member William Ronald.Although Macdonald depicted landscapes throughout his artisticcareer, it is perhaps his abstract works that are most intriguing.Prior to becoming a member of the Painters Eleven, Macdonaldstudied with Hans Hofmann in New York during the summers of 1948and 1949. This period was likely to have been the preliminary stepto the maturation of his work into an abstract form ofexpression.
In the latter period of his work until his death in 1960,Macdonald's paintings reflected a greater boldness of colour andfreedom of movement, which is so clearly evident in this work. AnnPollock wrote in the National Gallery of Canada's retrospectiveexhibition catalogue, "The last three years of Macdonald's lifewere, in many ways, his happiest and most productive. He was awarethat he was finally achieving a personal style that would expressall his feelings and ideas concerning life and nature."

Joyce Zemans, Jock Macdonald: The Inner Landscape, Art Gallery of
Ontario, 1981, page 63

In 1935, after the closure of the BC College of Arts in Vancouver
founded by Jock Macdonald and F.H. Varley, Macdonald and his family
moved to the remote Indian community of Nootka. They occupied an
abandoned cabin about three miles from the Indian settlement of
Friendly Cove until the fall of 1936. Although it was a challenging
subsistence existence, it was a valuable experience for Macdonald.
He was inspired by the close contact with nature and, free from the
demands of teaching, he had valuable time to experiment with the
direction of his work. As well as painting coastal landscapes,
Macdonald began work on semi-abstract and abstract works, which
would come to dominate his later work.

Driftwood, The Lagoon is an outstanding example of his landscape
work of the time. Macdonald's observation of nature in Nootka
reached a deeper level, where he sought "to find the essence of
life, the noumena of a subject." This is reflected in this work in
the simplification of forms to a more sculptural essence and the
extraordinary suffusion of light in the atmosphere, which has a
feeling of a spiritual essence.
