Description:
Lot 42: Jean Lurçat (1892-1966), Oil Painting, Voiles dans la Tempête Jean Lurcat (1892-1966) Description: Oil on canvas France, 1931 Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) - French painter, ceramic and tapestry artist Signed and dated lower right 'Lurçat 31' Broad opulent decorated frame Total dimensions, framed: 71.5 x 121.2 cm Very good condition Provenance: Private collection, Great Britain A work affected by Surrealism, in around 1931 Jean Lurçat created several versions of the subject matter of sails; comparable works fetch up to 30,000 Euros at international auctions The French painter Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) created this expressive painting 'Voiles dans la Tempête' in the year 1931, when he got married to Rosane Timotheef and they settled together in Vevey in Switzerland. His extensive journeys to the Mediterranean countries, North Africa and the Middle East had a great influence on his work. During the thirties, his paintings show tendencies of Surrealism. In 'Voiles dans la Tempête' he depicts sailing boats amid a storm on the open sea, but in abstracted form. In a playful light technique the artist renders an imaginary, almost dreamlike image of the scene. The painting is signed and dated lower right 'Lurçat 31'. At the lower margin are singular punctual touch-ups and hardly visible craquelé. Overall the painting and frame are very well preserved. The dimensions of the stretcher frame are 50 x 99.3 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 71.5 x 121.2 cm. Jean Lurçat (1892-1966) The French painter ceramic and tapestry artist Jean Lurçat was born in 1892 in Bruyères, Vosges. He studied at the École des beaux-arts and the der Académie Colarossi in Paris. Between the two World Wars, Lurçat became famous as a painter. After the Second World War, he focused increasingly on the art of tapestry. In 1962, Lurçat founded the International Center of new and old tapestry, which hosted in the same year the first International Biennale in Lausanne and which is world-wide one of the most important centers f textile art. Jean Lurçat participated in 1959 at the documenta II; in 2002 a Musée Jean Lurçat was founded in Eppenborn.
