19 Jean Lurcat French, 1892-1966 Les Voiles, 1930 Signed Lurcat and dated N.Y. 30 (lr); inscribed LD 167 in pencil and N.Y. 727 in marker on the stretcher Oil on canvas 42 x 30 1/8 inches (106.7 x 76.5 cm) Provenance: Galerie Demotte, Paris/New York Annette and Louis Kaufman collection, Los Angeles Earl Stendahl collection, Los Angeles, thence by descent to the present owner The former owner of the painting, Louis Kaufman, was a classical violinist who became known for recording soundtracks for Hollywood, in films such as Casablanca, The Grapes of Wrath, and Gone with the Wind. He also performed chamber music with Pablo Casals and Jascha Heifetz. Together with his wife Annette, also a musician, they amassed a large art collection, including works by Lurcat and Milton Avery, many of which were donated to the National Gallery. Earl Stendahl opened his first gallery in Los Angeles in 1921, and became one of the most important dealers in modern art on the West Coast. C

Provenance Sale: Hôtel Drouot, Paris, 18th June 1989, lot 282 Sale: Artcurial, Paris, 2nd April 2015, lot 114 Acquired at the above by the present owner Literature Gérard Denizeau & Simone Lurçat, L'Œuvre peint de Jean Lurçat, Catalogue raisonné, Lausanne, 1998, no. 1923-23, illustrated p. 397 108 Jean Lurçat dedicated Pour Leslie Goldberg très amicalement and signed JLurcat (lower right) gouache on paper 18 x 14 1/2 in. Executed in 1933. Paper laid down on card, which is taped to the overmount along the upper edge. The sheet is slightly light stained. There is a repaired tear (approx 1 cm) to the upper left quadrant. There is a flattened crease to the centre of the left edge and another to the centre of the right edge.
