Description:
Lot 203: Maximilien Luce, Le Port d'Amsterdam, 1907 Description: Signed and dated 'Luce 1907' in purple lower right. We would like to thank Denise Bazetoux, Maisons-Lafitte, for kind information as of 7 October 2014. In the years 1907 and 1908 Maximilien Luce was repeatedly drawn to Holland, where he visited the towns of Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Amsterdam to look at the works of old masters like Rembrandt, Vermeer, Van Ostade and Holbein in the museums there. In contrast, his own style of painting displays more of an occupation with light and prismatic effects of colour. For a few years Luce worked in a very strict pointillist style; later he developed a freer manner of painting. His paintings always testify to a great freshness and sensibility and also to a general appreciation of the everyday. Luce was born in Paris as the son of a wagon builder employed by the French rail company. It is thus no surprise that the depiction of people at work, but also of landscapes and urban scenes, became his main motifs. This painting is from the collection of Oscar Ghez de Castelnuovo (1905-1998), a Swiss-born entrepreneur, art collector and patron from Tunisia. Ghez founded the Musée du Petit Palais in Geneva, which opened in 1968 in an urban villa purchased by him. In 1978 he donated a large part of his collection to the University of Haifa. 48.5 x 64 cm In very good condition with fresh colours. The edges slightly worn due to framing.
