Eugenio Lucas Velasquez

Eugenio Lucas Velazquez (1817-1870) attributed Escaped the Bull, inscribed E. Lucas, oil on panel, 46 x 63 cm, framed, damaged (cracking, losses), (Rei) Velazquez, the late Romantic painter and pupil at the Madrid Academy, is known for his lively and dramatic representations. THE PROPERTY OF A EUROPEAN COLLECTOR Eugenio Lucas Velázquez was one of the most important Spanish painters to work in the Goya tradition; this work is loosely based on Goya's composition of the same subject (fig. 1), and is notable for its strong brushwork, impasto, and a more realist approach to the subject. The scene is clearly one of courtship, rather than the more enigmatic atmosphere of Goya's prototype. An important and acclaimed artist in his own right, Lucas Velázquez was official painter to Queen Isabella II, and a successful exhibitor at the Exposition Universelle in Paris in 1855. He forged a style that was more painterly in style than Goya's, and it has been suggested that his work was a precursor to Impressionism. In particular the renowned Goya expert, José Manuel Arnáiz, has commented that Lucas 'exercised a certain influence on Manet, whom he apparently knew, and for whom he acted perhaps as a translator of Goya.'
