Lucas (John) Alfred Harmsworth Senior, aged about 18, oval bust-length portrait, charcoal heightened with white chalk, 435 x 360mm., identified in a later inscription on verso of backboard, framed and glazed, c.1855. The inscription of the backboard states “Alfred Harmsworht Sen., about 18 years, by John Lucas, cousin of Seymour Lucas R.A., who painted the portrait of A.H. in barrister’’s wig (See Cecil Harmsworth’’s Diary, 24 Feb, 1921)”.
