Property from a Texas Collector Richard Lorenz (American, 1858-1915) The herders signed 'R. Lorenz.' (lower left) oil on canvas 22 x 30in PROVENANCE: Private collection, Texas Private collection, Texas, by descent German-born artist, Robert Lorenz, came to the United States in 1886 and settled in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He would stay in America for the remainder of his life, frequently traveling from Milwaukee and throughout the American West to paint and sketch his surroundings. Lorenz was fascinated by the culture of the Plains Indians and the influence of the infiltrating white man's civilization. His paintings are illustrative, dramatic and naturally realistic in their renderings. Lorenz is also remembered for his vast contributions as an art teacher in Wisconsin, first at the Milwaukee Art School, then at the Wisconsin School of Art and finally, at his own school, the Lorenz Art School. His most famous pupil is thought to be Frank Tenney Johnson, another notable western painter.

RICHARD LORENZ (American, 1858-1915) Round Up Oil on canvas 24 x 34 inches (61.0 x 86.4 cm) PROVENANCE: The artist; Elsa Deuter, the artist's niece, 1915; Thence by descent to Richard Deuter, her son, 1931. Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000. Condition Report*: Original canvas has been wax lined with slight stretcher creases visible along the top and bottom edges. The paint layer is stable with slight frame abrasion along the outer edges. UV light examination reveals minor scattered inpainting to the upper right corners and very minor points of inpainting to the horses.
