John Frederick Loos Belgian, fl. 1861-1895 The "Jessie Burrill" Reducing Sail off Beachy Head Signed John Loos and dated Antwerp 1880 (lr) Oil on canvas 20 1/2 x 30 inches (52 x 76.2 cm) The "Jessie Burrill" was built in Church Point, Nova Scotia in 1879. Her sailing career came to an end only three years later. In March 30, 1882, carrying a cargo of kerosene to Shanghai, she was dismasted by a typhoon and abandoned in shallow water off Tung-ying Island. Her cargo caught fire, and the ship was totally destroyed. Fortunately, all aboard were rescued by passing ships. C

Built in 1875 by Osbourne, Graham & Co., Sunderland for W.H. Owen of Liverpool and initially based in that port. She was sold to JC & GS Richardson of Swansea in 1892, so this portrait, possibly commissioned by her new owners, will date from this period. She disappears from the register in 1896.

The topsail schooner Deveron was built by Geddie at Banff in1871. Registered at 133 tons and measuring 89 feet in length with a21 foot beam, she began life trading out of Banff to the Baltic.Sold by her original owners in 1889, by 1900 she was owned by T.Couch of Padstow, Cornwall, who put her into the China Clay trade.On 19th June 1905 she was sunk in Portland Roads after collidingwith the destroyer H.M.S. Conflict.

JOHN FREDERICK LOOS (Belgian, 1861-1895) THE AMERICAN SHIP "SERVIA" OFF THE COAST OF BELGIUM.
Outstanding oil on canvas nautical scene shows the black-hulled ship sailing right to left with sails up flying the American flag and having eleven crew members on deck. The name emblazoned on the bow and stern. Beautifully rendered blue ocean with a smaller vessel off the bow and closer to the land mass beyond. White cloud and blue sky. Signed bottom right "John Loos Antwerp 1888". Housed in a period gilt gesso decorated frame with gilt liner. Back having an Oliphant & Co. New York label. SIZE: 27" x 39-1/2". CONDITION: Very good, relined, minor touch up. 9-99204 (25,000-35,000)
