Description:
82. William Lock of Norbury (1767 - 1847). Group of thirty-two figural and landscape sketches. Pen and brown ink and brown wash on laid paper. Various sizes, largest 13 x 20 1/2 inches (33 x 52 cm). c. 1790 - 1800. Several with caption titles. Provenance : Sotheby's London, 7 July 1983, lot 10. A wide ranging collection of drawings depicting Lock's circle in London, including a sketch of General D'Arblay (Fanny Burney's husband), the Duke of Manchester, various uniformed gentlemen, some Algerians, horses and other subjects. Lock purchased Norbury Park in 1774, a large estate near Dorking, Surrey and here entertained his set including D'Arblay, Talleyrand, Johnson, Reynolds, Burke, Gibbon, Comte de Norbonne, and Madame de Stael. Fanny Burney visited often and fell in love with D'Arblay at Norbury. They married and Lock gave them a plot of land on the estate to build a home, 'Camilla Cottage,' named after her first book. She is said to have found inspiration in Norbury Park for her novel Camilla.

WILLIAM LOCK (ATTRIBUTED TO) (Norbury 1767-1847 Rome) A Classical Battle Scene . Pen and brown ink on cream laid paper, 1782. 315x530 mm;121/2x201/2 inches. Dated "Jan'y 1782" in ink, lower rightrecto. Though he never exhibited and is seen mainly as a gifted amateurartist, Lock was friends and trained with John Henry Fuseli(1741-1825), whose influence is manifest in this earlydrawing. Estimate $1,000-1,500
