signed lower right on envelope that held this letter, with the artist's name and a New York address on the envelope and signed lower left and titled on verso. Oil on canvas

A seated, doleful clown or opera singer in white Pagliacci-style garb,
barely hanging on to a letter with his left hand and holding out his right. This suggests that he is thinking of supplicating some higher power or person for help, explanation, comfort, or redress, because of the adverse content and consequences of the letter that he has just opened
and read.
