Description:
William Linton, R.B.A. (1791-1876) The Grimaldi Palace, The Rocher de Monaco inscribed 'Monaco, on the Cornice/pass - near Nice/by Wm Linton'(on a label attached to the stretcher) oil on paper, laid down on canvas 10 7/8 x 15 1/8 in. (27.5 x 38.5 cm.) Collection of Colonel M. H. Grant. with H. M. Luther. Lot Notes A fortress was founded on the Rocher de Monaco by the Genoese in1191. By the end of the 13th Century it was the stronghold of theGrimaldi family, who from the 17th Century have ruled the Rocherand surrounding mainland as sovereign princes. Over the centuriesthe fortress has been added to and improved and the Rocher nowcomprises one of the four quartiers of Monaco, Monaco-Ville, andincorporates the seat and official residence of the Princes ofMonaco, the Grimaldi Palace. Linton travelled widely throughout Europe, sketching landscapes andsights from Greece to Germany. In 1843-4 he spent nearly a yearexploring the landscape between Nice and Spezzia, and it isprobable that our painting dates from this trip.

Description:
William Linton (1791-1876) An Italianate landscape, with peasants and livestock in theforeground oil on canvas 39¼ x 54¼ in. (99.7 x 137.7 cm.) Provenance J. McLean; Christie's, London, 19 November 1904, lot 39 (sold 9guineas to Evans). Linton painted landscapes throughout England, Scotland andWales, however it was his Italianate views that established hisreputation. He was a contemporary of Turner (1775-1851) and wasalso inspired by the classical compositions and glowing palette ofthe canvases of Claude Lorrain (1600-1682). Linton exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and BritishInstitute from 1817, and also at the Liverpool Academy between 1830and 1865. He was a founding member of the Society of BritishArtists in 1823 where he was both Vice-President (1836) andPresident (1837). It is likely that an Italianate landscape of thisscale would have been exhibited and it may correspond with one oftwo exhibits at the Royal Academy, one in 1839 and another in1843.
