Description:
Beginning in the mid-1950s, the American steam locomotive and its imminent demise became the obsession of O. Winston Link. Link spent the second half of the 1950s (1955-1960) documenting its final years before its extinction by way of the diesel engine trains. “The Popes and the Last Steam Passenger Train, Max Meadows, Virginia, December 31, 1957” is a fine example of Link’’’’s compulsion; it serves as an elegiac portrait of a couple watching the last train leave the station while serving as a larger symbol for the end of the locomotive era. One of the pioneers of night photography, Link invented a lighting system specifically to photograph these engines with their steam plumes dramatically illuminating the night sky. O. Winston Link (American, 1914-2001) One of the pioneers of night photography, Ogle Winston Link began his career as a commercial photographer. After studying to be a civil engineer at the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn, Link spent five years at a public relations firm. In 1955, his photographic subject matter changed due to his love of railroads; he began to take images of the Norfolk and Western Railway line, documenting some of the last steam engines in America. Many of these photographs were taken at night to control the lighting. His works have been exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art and the O. Winston Link Museum in Roanoke, VA.
