Matt Lindstrom

Provenance: Private Collection, Toronto Literature: Bill Musselwhite, Personality of the Week, The Calgary Herald, April 17, 1970 Matt Lindstrom was born in Finland of Swedish parents and emigrated to Canada in 1929. It was an inauspicious time to start a new life in a new country, as Canada was crippled by the Great Depression. Lindstrom worked in menial jobs, painting in the evenings to fuel his own passion. It was not until 1945, at the age of fifty-five that he began his full time career as a painter. He received scholarships to study at the Banff School of Fine Arts, and befriended Roland Gissing, an established artist in his own right. In 1970, Bill Musselwhite noted, ".most of his sketches and his paintings deal with scenes familiar to Calgarians - foothills and mountains west of the city. He especially loves trees."
