Attracted to "industrial power technology and efficiency" from the time of his youth in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lewandowski was the American artist who sustained the Precisionist style longest. After beginning his career as an American scene painter in the 1930s, he was impacted by the art of Charles Sheeler and adopted the streamlined Precisionist aesthetic to which he was committed until the end of his life. In Cruise Ship, No. II, inspired by a Mediterranean cruise that the artist took, Lewandowski narrowed his focus to the central mast of the ship and its top deck, capturing the way that artistry and new technology were conjoined in the design of a vessel intended for smooth travel along the Italian and Greek coasts. The light-retentive surfaces of the white ship against the translucent blue sky result in an iconic image of this subject.
