Leprince arrived in Saint Petersburg in 1757, where he receivedmore than forty commissions to paint overdoors in the Winter Palacefor the Empress Elizabeth. He is said to have travelled widely inRussia, according to some as far as Siberia. The drawings he madethere provided the basis for a considerable body of work that addedto the general taste of the 18th century for exotica andspecifically russeries .
