CATALOGUE NOTE
The figure seated on the right of the sofa is probably a self-portrait. Lemaire had a great reputation at the turn of the century, and the musical receptions she held in her atelier were among the most fashionable in Paris at that time. Réjane, Dumas fils, Bartet, Léon Daudet, Coquelin 'père et fils' were all frequent guests, and it was at one such evening that Marcel Proust met Robert de Montesquiou.
