There are twelve known subsequent castings which were completed posthumously under the supervision of his widow Ethel Traphagen Leigh. The original model of Buffalo was created as a prepatory work for Leigh's epic paintings Buffalo Hunt (1947) in the Rockwell Museum of Western Art and Buffalo Drive (1947) in the Whitney Gallery of Western Art at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center.
