Cesar Legaspi 1917-1994 MASK Titled on the reverse Acrylic on Masonite board 63 by 44.5 cm.; 24 3/4 by 17 1/2 in. Read Condition Report Read Condition Report Register or Log-in to view condition report Saleroom Notice Provenance Acquired from Luz Gallery in Manila 1977 Private Collection, Malaysia Sotheby's Hong Kong, October 7 2012, Lot 299 “The power and fascinating quality of Legaspi’’s [paintings] stem from the feeling that they strike deep into subconscious reserves of energy and imagination. Aside from being dramatic metaphors of “the human condition,” they are also visual correlatives of inner moods and psychological weathers.” Alice G. Guillermo, Image to Meaning: Essays on Philippine Art, Ateneo de Manila University Press, Philippines, 2001, p.209 The work is in good condition overall, as is the board which is free from scuffs and abrasion. There are indications of minor wear and handling on the margins, along with associated minor paint losses on the edges of the board. Any surface inconsistencies appear to be inherent to the artist's working methods. Examination under ultraviolet light indicates no evidence of retouching. Framed. 34 Cesar Legaspi 1917 - 1994 "Heroes" Signed and dated 1979 (lower right) Oil on wood 17 1/2" x 22 1/2" (44.45cm x 57.15cm) P 120,000 Provenance: With Finale Art File Acquired from the above by the present owner. 1994 This piece is accompanied by a certificate issued by Dennis K. Legaspi confirming the authenticity of this lot. A shining example of the works he produced in mid-career, this portrait of Filipino heroes Antonio Luna and MH del Pilar was produced in 1979, the year Legaspi was appointed head of the elite collective of visual artists called The Saturday Group. Combining portraiture and the unconventional cubist style he's known for -- he injects the inherently emotion-less cubism with human emotion, in this case a sense of celebration and nationalistic pride -- "Heroes" is undeniably vintage Legaspi.

90 Cesar Legaspi 1917 - 1994 Waterfall Signed and dated 1992 (lower right) Oil on canvas 17 1/2" x 22" (44.45cm x 55.88cm) P 120,000 Provenance: Private Collection, Manila. While the distinct style of Legaspi can be gleaned from this work -- a careful inspection of the rock formations will show this -- it is very much one of a kind as it features an outdoor scenery, particularly a waterfall, which is rather uncommon in his body of work.
