Description:
Valentin Lefevre (Bruxelles 1642–1680 Venice) Piscina probatica, oil on canvas, 69x116.5cm, unframed Provenance: Collection of Theodor von Brücke (1853–1918), Vienna; Private European collection We are grateful to Mauro Lucco for his help in cataloguing the present painting. The present composition derives from the Piscina Probatica (or The Probatic Pool) by Jacopo Tintoretto (1518–1594) of 1559, made for the Church of San Rocco, Venice. Lefèvre also executed a drawing offered at Christie\’s, London (12 December 1996, lot 93), of the same subject as the present painting. This was the preparatory drawing for an engraving that appeared in the collection Opera Selectiora by Lefèvre. This etching is in the library of the Museo Correr, Venice, and is inscribed: \‘Iacobus Robusti. Dictus Tintorettus In Et Pinx. / V. lefebre del. Et sculp. / J. Van Campen F. Venetijs\’ (see U. Ruggeri, Valentin Lefèvre 1637-1677, Reggio Emilia 2001, pp. 137-226). The ionic capitals and the projecting brackets appear in the engraving as do the dangling legs of the ailing man at lower left. Lefèvre made study-copies after the works of sixteenth-century Venetian painters, and especially those of Paulo Veronese and Tintoretto. Lefèvre also executed another version of the Piscina probatica by Tintoretto, although this reveals numerous variant details (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Poitiers, inv. no. 948.52.1).

Description:
Valentin Lefevre (Brussels 1642-circa 1699 Venice)
Portrait of a cardinal, oil on canvas, 81 x 66.8 cm, framed,

We are grateful to Professor Ugo Ruggeri, Venice, who has identified the painting as an important work from the Venetian period of Lefevre (certificate dated January 2011). He plans to publish it in a supplementary essay on Lefevre.

Valentin Lefevre was the last north European artist to become one of the most important exponents of the school of painting of the city of Venice during his stay there. His mature work may thus be associated with the pinnacle of this development begun by artists, such as Vredeman de Vries and Rottenhammer. As the last of the adopted Baroque Venetian painters, Lefevre was successful in establishing a reputation for his large-format history painting. Here he integrates the characteristics of this school in an impressively designed portrait. Aside from the figure of the sitter which dominates the pictorial space, the artist\’\’\’\’s expressive brushwork impresses the viewer as does the use of colour, light, shade and contour. In 1670, Lefevre, who had been documented as being in Venice as early as 1664, executed his masterpiece, the altarpiece depicting the \‘Glory of St. Maurus\’\’\’\’ in the church of Santa Giustina in Padua. In the same year, he also produced a large ceiling fresco directly alongside Veronese\’\’\’\’s fresco for the cupola in the church of San Giorgio Maggiore. This portrait is an important addition to Lefevre\’\’ \’\’s oeuvre.

Valentin Lefevre
(Brussels 1642 – c. 1699 Venice)
Portrait of a cardinal,

oil on panel,

81 x66.8 cm,

framed,

We aregrateful to Professor Ugo Ruggeri,

who has identified thepresent painting as a most important work from Lefevre\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’sVenetian period (certificate of January 2011). He intends topublish it in a forthcoming supplementary edition on the works ofLefevre.

Valentin Lefevre isthe last artist from Northern Europe who,

while inVenice,

became one of the most prominent exponents of theVenetian school of painting. Lefevre\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’s mature oeuvre is part ofa development that was launched by such artists as Vredeman deVries and Rottenhammer. As the last foreign painter of the Baroquearea who adopted Venice as his home,

Lefevre,

whoalso painted large-sized history paintings,

succeeded inintegrating all of the typical features of the Venetian traditioninto this impressively composed portrait. The picture\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’s space isfilled with the figure of the sitter,

whose expressivelyrendered cloak strikes the viewer for the fascinating handling ofthe brush and treatment of colour,

as well as thedistribution of light and shadow within the outlines. This was todemonstrate the victory of \\\‘colore\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’ over \\\‘disegno\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’.

Lefevre is documentedto have been in Venice as early as 1664. In 1670 he painted hismasterpiece,

the altarpiece of the Glory of StMaurus,

in Santa Giustina in Padua. That same year heexecuted a large ceiling fresco right next to Veronese\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’s frescoin the dome of San Giorgio Maggiore. The present portraitrepresents an important addition to Lefevre\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’\\\’soeuvre.
