Catalogue Note

Beginning in 1931, Alma Lavenson undertook a series of plant studies that marked a departure from the industrial subjects that had comprised her recent work. Reminiscent of similar studies by Imogen Cunningham and Albert Renger-Patzsch, Lavenson's images focused on the plants' surface details and patterns.
According to Alma Lavenson authority Susan Ehrens, the photograph offered here is believed to be one of only two early prints of this image extant.

'CANNERY BLDGS., MONTEREY'
'CANNERY BLDGS., MONTEREY'
signed, titled, dated and with annotation in pencil on the reverse, 1939
7 3/8 by 10 in. (19.3 by 25.7 cm.)
This impressive, warm-toned early print, on double-weight paper with a semi-glossy surface, is in generally excellent condition. The edges are rubbed, with tiny, barely perceptible chipping at the left edge. The corners are slightly bumped. In raking light, a small, soft impression is visible in the upper right quadrant of the print. In addition to the signature, title, and date on the reverse, 'AL #25' is written in in an unidentified hand in pencil.
