Shortly after his first visit to Newlyn, the Cornish fishing village where he would become so successful, Langley set off to Brittany in 1881 with the artist Edwin Harris (1856-1906). Basing themselves in Pont Aven, Harris and Langley were captivated by 'the costume of the natives, who are popularly supposed to gain their living by washing one another's clothes in the intervals of posing as models, is probably the most picturesque in the whole of Finisterre' (see R. Langley, Walter Langley: Pioneer of the Newlyn Art Colony, Bristol, 1997, p. 53).
