Sir Osbert Lancaster (British, 1908-1986)
Candide - set of three theatrical set designs, circa 1959
each inscribed verso 'Candide' and one dated, gouache
the largest 14 1/2" x 20" (3).
Candide opened at the Saville Theatre, London on April 30 1959 after runs at the New Theatre, Oxford, and the Opera House, Manchester. It ran for 60 performances and starred Denis Quilley. Osbert Lancaster designed the sets and costumes.

best known for his cartoonspublished in the The Daily Express. He initially worked withBetjeman at the Architectural Review In 1936 he published Progressat Pelvis Bay,
the first of his many books of social andarchitectural satire. In 1939 he became cartoonist at the DailyExpress,
where he pioneered the Pocket Cartoon,
atopical single-panel single-column drawing appearing on the frontpage,
since imitated in several British newspapers. Inthese he sympathetically mocked the British upper classes,
personified by his characters William (8th Earl ofLittlehampton,
formerly Viscount Draynflete) and his wifeMaudie. During his Express career he drew some 10,000 cartoons overa period of 40 years

Lot Notes
Osbert Lancaster worked as a cartoonist, painter and author,producing designs and costumes for theatre, opera and ballet. Theseincluded La Fille mal garde for The Royal Ballet, L'italiana inAlgeri and Falstaff for Glyndebourne and Hotel Paradiso, Zulrika,and Candide for the theatre. The present work was part ofLancaster's set design for All's Well That Ends Well which wasperformed at the Old Vic in 1953. A volume of the play waspublished in 1963 with illustrations and an introduction byLancaster.
