Wifredo Lam (1902-1982) Idoli 1972 signed and dated 1972 ; signed and dated 1972 on the reverse oil on canvas 35 by 25 cm. 13 3/4 by 9 13/16 in. This work is registered with the Wifredo Lam Archive under number 72.60. Provenance Art Club Cardinale 2, Milan Acquired directly from the above by the present owner in 1974 Literature Lou Laurin-Lam, Wifredo Lam, Catalogue Raisonné of the Painted Work Vol.II 1961-1982 , p.368, illustrated "I could have been a good painter of the School of Paris, but I felt like a snail out of its shell. What has really broadened my painting is the presence of African poetry" The artist quoted in Wifredo Lam: Catalogue Raisone Vol. I , Lou Larin-Lam, p.106 Wifredo Lam's influences were varied and diverse, largely as a result of his peripatetic lifestyle. Born in Cuba of mixed-race ancestry, he gave up his studies in law to move to Madrid in 1923. It was here that he discovered a love of nonconformist art, with Surrealism having a lasting impact on his work. In 1938 he decamped to Paris, where Picasso became an important influence and guide. The visual repercussions of this relationship are evident in the simplified, almost frieze-like forms of Idoli , which also includes Lam's distinctive human/animal hybrids. Picasso's passion for African sculpture is also seen here, with both artists enjoy the primitive vigour that these tribal objects portrayed. Painted during a period when Lam divided his time between France, New York and Cuba, the current lot is a prime example of Lam's mature style, its modernist aesthetic powerfully capturing a sense of archaic spirituality.
