Property of a Distinguished New York Collection
Christie's is pleased to two sculptures by Gaston Lachaise, lots 19 and 129 from a Distinguished New York Collection. The works on offer are but a sliver of years by collectors with unique vision, understanding and appreciation of a diverse range of artistic movements. There are many highlights and works of particular note within the collection, one that started with passion and understanding of the extraordinary influence of Pablo Picasso over the entirety of 20th-century art. For this collector Picasso is absolute, the root from which everything else emanates and evolves--an undeniable influence. Before anything was or is added into the collection it has to be judged worthy of hanging alongside works by the Spanish master.
Works from this collection will be sold in multiple sale venues at Christie's this fall season, including the New York Impressionist and Modern, Post-War and Contemporary, and Latin American Evening sales. Leading the collection is the surrealist painting by René Magritte, Les verrés fumes included in the New York, November 7th Impressionist and Modern Art Evening sale. A highlight of the New York, November 14th Post-War and Contemporary Art Evening sale is a large scale and incredibly colorful Jean Dubuffet painting titled La chaise from his L'hourloupe series, and featured alongside are magnificent works in the day sales by Henry Moore, Fernand Léger, Claude Lalanne, Alexander Calder and Gerhard Richter, among others, not least of which Pablo Picasso whose unique ceramic vase featuring four full panel images of owls titled Grande vase carré hibou is stunning in its large scale presence.
