Charles Euphrasie Kuwasseg (Draveil 1833/8-1904 Paris) A view of a Mediterranean harbour signed and dated 'C. Kuwasseg. fils. 1873' (lower left) oil on canvas 56.2 x 100.3 cm.
Although the harbour town depicted in this picture has not been identified so far, the composition closely resembles a painting by Kuwasseg of the town of Camogli in Italy (with Burlington, London).

The artist was the son of the painter Karl Josef Kuwasseg. He began his artistic training with his father before entering the French navy and travelling widely. Kuwasseg exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon between 1859 and 1904. His works predominantly depict views of northern France and Belgium. (cf. Thieme-Becker, Künstlerlexikon, vol. XXXII, p.145)

Surface dirt, bubbling and cracking to paint in all corners, wear to paint at edges, minor specks of paint loss in sky, repairs visible in the sky to the right of the steeple above the ships, impression to paint in lower right corner, localized areas of craquelure throughout, slight impression in sky, inpainting in sky and around repairs and lower quadrant, oxidized varnish.
Framed: 27 x 44 inches.
