Other WORKS AT AUCTION
Description:
Ernst Karl Eugen Koerner (German,
1846-1927)
The Temple of Wadi es-Sebua, Nubia
signed 'Ernst Koerner' and dated '1909' (lower right)
oil on canvas
85
x 127cm
(33 7/16
x 50in).
Wadi es-Sebua, meaning 'Valley of the Lions', was a temple complex
built by Amenhotep III and Ramses II in ancient Nubia, on the west
bank of the Nile. In 1964, construction of the Aswan Dam threatened
the area, and the temple built by Ramses II was relocated to higher
ground four kilometres away. The older temple of Amenhotep III was
left to be buried beneath the rising waters of Lake Nasser.
Koerner's painting offers a historic view of the temple in its
original position.
Another work,
The Temple of Karnak, The Great Hypostyle
Hall
, inspired by Koerner's 1873-74 travels in the Middle East,
is in the collection of the Dahesh Museum.
